THE NOISE http://www.thenoise-boston.com/live_reviews MACH 5, JADED Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA 3/17/06 Lolita and I stroll into the Abbey on Saint Patty's Day as four longhaired sexy babes in leather commence their ultimate rock show. The big flashing sign behind them doesn't let us forget we're experiencing Jaded. These babes rock hard. After Hillary Blaze's big drum solo we are treated to a flashy guitar solo, not from the stage, but from atop the Abbey bar. A single flashlight shines on Britt Lightning's angular leopard Jackson guitar as she speeds through her expanded vocabulary of tapping techniques (made famous by Eddie Van Halen). Vocalists Julie Steel wails through "Knock It Back" encouraging everyone to suck down their drinks. Julie jumps into the crowd to tip bottles with every drinker in the house. Good melodies, easy background join-ins, and lots of young sexy flesh make Jaded's rock show a must see. Mach Bell won't be overshadowed as he grabs the mic and shouts "Bring in the spirits mother fucker!" in his green fuzzy top hat, velvet coat and pants, gold chains, and star-shaped sunglasses. Mach 5 rocks out covering "Take Me To the River" in a New York Dolls vs. AC/DC style. Dee Stroy is working off a five-day bender-no wonder he barks out his smartly crafted "Can't Get Through To You." Lolita and I become part of the lyrics in "Deadly Combination" where bassist Jeff Thomas uses all of his twelve strings (that's right, he plays a four-string bass with each string tripled) to create chiming parts that sound like a new instrument entering the mix. Drummer Jimmy Birmingham keeps the house rockin' when Mach is overtaken by his aerial view of titillating tittage in the front row and dives down on two gorgeous gals. Yeah, sex never fails when mixed with spirits and great rock 'n' roll on St. Patty's Day. (T Max)
NORTHEAST PERFORMER MAGAZINE http://www.performermag.com/rumble_rap_up.php The 2006 WBCN Rock and Roll Rumble April 3, 2006 Taxpayer / Mach 5 / Scamper / Plan B Taxpayer opened the second night of the Rumble to a decently swollen crowd for a Monday night. They had a much more varied sound from song to song than any other band of the night. The main thing that hurt Taxpayer was the sound of the vocals. Not the way they were sung but rather the way they were mixed. MACH 5 seems to get much less respect than they deserve. More than half of the crowd disappeared a song or two into their set. It may have been the overlap of the sets where people realized they were not liquored up enough to watch the rest of the show, but nevertheless Mach 5 brought the most entertaining rock of the night. As Scamper took the stage, they looked too clean-cut to be following the pure rock grit of Mach 5, but they managed to quickly win over a crowd with their polished act. Out of all the bands of the night, Scamper could easily be inserted into the MTV line up. Halfway through their set the bass player ripped the strap button clear out of his bass. This offered the crowd a moment to soak in Scamper's personality. A bass replacement was graciously offered up by Taxpayer and Scamper's night and rumble hopes were saved. By
the time Plan B took the stage the crowd had severely dwindled, but they
brought as much energy as one could imagine. Their songs sounded too much
like one another, but the gem of their performance was the extremely visceral
playing of the drummer. Mach 5/Red Invasion/Orange-Midway Cafe, Jamaica Plain, MA 10/28/2000 Ex-Thundertrain singer Mach Bell came out of retirement in 2005 and formed Mach 5. If that wasn't enough to rock your world he recruited the shining star known as Dee Stroy as his guitar player. Talk about your deadly combinations. Mach still sounds like Noddy Holder. Dee still sounds like Johnny Thunders. The band just flat out rocks. The fact that they brought along Red Invasion for this trip puts this show into the top 10...Looking forward to seeing what 2006 brings for both of these relatively new bands. Reprinted from Eric Law's annual top 10 list of shows by boston bands. So, last Friday I noticed all the MBTA buses in Boston and Cambridge had "COWBOY UP!!!" all over them..ya know why, don't ya??? They were talkin' about the Mach 5 gig at the Abbey that night...and it was a great one! Cowboy Mach Bell shook the house down as usual and with the new addition of Dee Stroy (Sugabomb) on guitar and a killer rhythm sectioncomprised of Jimmy Birmingham(did I say hot???) and Carl Biancucci not to be matched by anyone, anywhere. They also brought Lolita of The Noise up on stage to sing background vocals. Miss Lyn Reprinted from BOSTON GROUPIE NEWS Online (5/2/06) http://www.bostongroupienews.com/ The Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA - 4/29/05 Do you remember Rock'n'Roll radio? Mach Bell does. And he and his band of merry rockers sample almost every subgenre there is, just like the radio used to do before program consultants and big corporations took over. Mach 5 can play any song, ever, and make it sound brand new and totally bad for you. They do it dirty, and they make you love it. Jimmy Birmingham (drums - formerly of The Real Kids) and Carl Biancucci (bass - also of Classic Ruins, and countless others) are the best rhythm section ever...well, at least the best ever to play the Abbey Lounge. They're flexible and versatile, powerful and flashy, and as steady as a metronome. Brand new guitarist Dee Stroy (Sugabomb, Johnnies) unleashes his glam-punk-metal attack to great result, and has some fun trying not to fall over while Mach jumps on him, leans over him, pushes and shoves him. And Mach Bell (Thundertrain, Joe Perry Project) is just about the perfect front man. He's got more energy than a man his age has any right to have, but his mission is not to burn out - it's to share his power with you and draw you into his world, a world where bad boys never grow up and there are no laws agains driving fast, where it's ok to love a psycho and where all the fallen heroes of rock are still alive and well and shooting up junk in the back alley without any danger of overdose or hepatitis. Wow, that sentence really got away from me, didn't it? Well, just to recap - Mach 5 are the bomb-diggity! Go see them!!!! Brian Mosher Reprinted from BMO's World Good Rockin' Good Writin' The Noodles Review Mach 5 Live at The Abbey Lounge, 11/11/05 I was gonna take my family to Dairy Queen tonight, cause it's Friday night, and that is "Family Night Doing Things Outside The Trailer Park" night. But, I got lost, and stopped for directions at the Abbey Lounge. I forgot that once I shut off the ignition key in my '86 Yugo, several hours must pass before it will stop overheating enough to start again. So, we hung out at the Abbey for a couple of hours. My first thought, after paying 8 bucks apiece to get out of a cramped environment that smelled like a mixture of raw gasoline and an open sewer, was "Suck... no Dairy Queen!" But there was this bunch of guys onstage, wearing funny clothes, kinda like the guys in Slade, ya know... tight, rubbery-lookin' pants and shiny scarves right outta the Faggoty Andy catalog (attn: PC nazis. Don't get your panties in a bunch. How many people are actually gonna read this page? Besides, it's a joke. Do you know what a joke is?). They had a funny shaped guitar, and a bass with too many strings, and they were playin' real, straight-ahead ROCK and ROLL. The genuine article, not this "rock/rap-start-off-quiet-then-get-loud-and-sound-like-all-the-other-notalent-namby/pamby-all-songs-sound-the-same" boredom merchants. I said "Whoa... have I died and gone to 1977?!" Well, it turns out that this gathering of misfits at the Abbey Lounge were celebrating a CD release party for Mach 5, their new CD being "Meet Mach 5". Led by Mach Bell, a lead singer with an over-achieving Rock n Roll resume, the band not only had chops, they displayed brilliant marketing savvy. Case in point: not only are they sellin their fine new CD at this swanky establishment, their merch area is festooned with bubble gum, twizzlers, blow-pops, and atomic fire balls that are all free for the taking when you purchase a CD! As I approached the table to transact business with an attractive young female CD peddlar, Mr. Bell himself informs me that each CD comes with a free kiss from said young female CD peddlar. Hmmm. I'm thinkin, "This is true marketing genius, way better than payola. I bet if I was a female patron, I would get a lip-lock from The Man himself!" After brieifly fantasizing about what favors of the flesh might float my way if I bought an entire container of Mach 5 CDs - a kiss for each one? - a night in the limo with all of Mach's groupies? - and if I was really lucky, the ENTIRE box of Blow-Pops? After firmly planting myself back into reality, I politely refused that part of the trade, as I wanted to chew my twizzlers in peace. My lovely wife, being within eyeball shot of these activities, would have enjoyed watching me attempt to remove my twizzlers from the wrong orafice, cellophane wrappers and all. So I turned my attention to the stage, and watched and listened as Mach 5 proceeded to wreak musical havoc. A wrecking ball could not have destroyed the audience any more effectively. Aside from having a good hair day, these guys were playin' music like I haven't heard since the days when I was trying to lure 17-year-old girls into the back of my freak-bus with promises of peace, love, and black-light induced euphoria. In other words, they made me wanna jump right outta my battery-powered scooter chair! Power-drummer Jimmy Birmingham is living proof that the quest for a perpetual motion machine is over. He and Jeff Thomas, with his classic 12-string Hamer bass and his thump-a-thon low-end beat pounding, provide a rhythm section of mass destruction that the CIA should damn well investigate. Guitarist Dee Stroy stumbles around as if he just fell out of an ambulance going 80, and his "I'm a sloppy player but if you really pay attention I'm doin stuff that defies logic" style is a perfect compliment to the aforementioned rhythm heroics. Add to the mix Mr. Mach Bell, who has a voice that sounds like Noddy Holder after he has swallowed a bucket of sand, and what you get is... nearly perfect, unadulterated, garage-inspired, in-your-face ROCK AND ROLL in a very pure form. Since my memory is disappearing faster than my hair, I can't remember if they performed their entire CD, but I think they did. While they did some fine covers, the best being Slade's 70s anthem "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", it is their original material that by far causes more of the little hairs on your arms to stand up at attention from all the excitement. Most of the tunes are penned by Mr. Bell and Mr. Stroy, and I predict that they will become the next Lennon and McCartney... at least of Somerville. Lyrics that are smart and funny inject the intellectual juice into songs like "Deadly Combination", and my personal favorite, "Quincy Girl" (A song I defy you NOT to sing along with in the car..."Shut your pie-hole, Quincy girl"). "Through To You" (authored alone by Mr. Stroy) has some great harmony vocals over all the noise, and along with "25 Hours A Day" has catchy hooks. Music that doesn't want to make your brain stop and think about anything... except maybe the fact that it is becoming numb. "Kenmore Square" might be an exception, a lament about the long-gone Kenmore Square of Rock Legend History... a place that can be remembered by those of us who are now receiving AARP invitations in the mail, old enough to remember what President Dwight D. Eisenhower (the last Republican in office who was not an instrument of Satan) looked and sounded like. Mach bemoans "I'm just another face in the rain". For those who are too young to remember, it's just a great song to rock to. "Meet Mach 5" is a CD that grabs you by the neck, shakes you, and says "Shut off the damn radio". As good as it is, Mach 5 live is better. You are grabbed, shaken, stomped on, mugged, smacked upside the head, and left begging for more. Go see them. It'll be even better than Dairy Queen. I gotta go - I think the Yugo might start now. Noodles Romanov: God of Rock Guitar, and fertilizer salesman. http://mysite.verizon.net/vze7qolh/id3.html THE NOISE DEC. 2004 LIVE REVIEWS Mach V is a local supergroup, of sorts, brought together by Miss Lynn herself, according to front man Mach Bell of Thundertrain. Joined by the ubiquitous Carl Bianucci on bass, the absolutely perfect Jimmy Birmingham on drums, and Jeff Thomas on lead guitar, Bell is the definition of a rock 'n' roll front man. In his glittering jacket and weatherbeaten face, he bounces around the stage with seemingly limitless energy. He works the audience like the veteran he is, flirting with Vikki Sixx and Miss Lynn and jumping up onto the monitors to lean out over the audience. Not to mention the fact that he can still sing. Among the highlights of their set is a great version of Alice Cooper's "Under My Wheels," dedicated to Miss Lyn. But the absolute highlight of the entire night is when Richie Parsons (ex-Unnatural Axe) jumps on stage to sing his song "Can't Wait for Summertime," as well as the Tuff Darts' "All For the Love of Rock 'n' Roll."
